… and why is it so important to achieve it?
In today’s fast paced business world, we all work hard and face the challenge of creating balance between professional and personal life. We aim for so many things at the same time — professional development, personal relationships, friendships, finance, physical and mental health. Juggling the demands of a career and a personal life turns out to be quite stressful for most people, resulting in lower efficiency, chaos and stress, as well as a number of physical problems, including back pains, headaches, sleep and mood disorders.
We meet Lily Georgieva, a personal branding and career advisor, to find out why we struggle to separate work from private life, and, more importantly, how to achieve the necessary balance.
It all starts with our personalities, says Lily Georgieva. It is very important to be aware of what our key life and professional roles are, and to dedicate our time, efforts and energy to them. Everything else should be of minor importance. We should also manage our time effectively and not waste too much time for lower-priority tasks, Georgieva further advises.
Sometimes we neglect our need of proper sleep. According to recent studies, more and more people sleep just 4 hours per night, despite the recommended sleep range of 6 to 8 hours per night. A report by The Sleeping Council shows this is valid for more than 1 in 3 people. This is often due to poor time management.
Achieving work-life balance is a key element in maintaining a healthy and effective lifestyle. Simply said — knowing when to get away from work without feeling guilty for doing nothing.
I know it sounds impossible and we can’t eliminate all the stressors in our lives, but we can learn to take care of ourselves. Set your priorities and don’t be afraid to say ‘NO’ to everything that may overwhelm or distract you. And always leave work at work, forget about it, and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Start your day in the right way. Find a morning routine which helps you kick off the day on a positive note. Whether it’s some sort of exercise or just having a cup of coffee in a comfortable place, make sure you do it.
